Who wants to run a race? | The 2009 Broad Street Run

Whether you’re an avid runner or someone who’s just passively thought about running, the 2009 Broad Street Run is for you.  The Broad Street Runis one of the largest races of its kind.  Participants range from young to old and the one, from fast to slow and from thin to… well you get the point.  The one thing we all have in common at the start is an almost overwhelming feeling of spirit, and comradery.  Last year’s race was dedicated to Robert Massaroni. Rob was a 29 year old social studies teacher at Robert Shafer Middle School, as well as an instructor at Black Belt Academy and Shin Karate in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Rob tragically passed away after finishing the 2007 Blue Cross Broad Street Run with a group of 60 students from Shafer Middle School.

I’ll be starting training this week and I can’t tell you how excited I am.  This is one of three races I make a commitment to participate in and marks the start of the race season for me.

The distance for this race is 10 miles; the perfect distance for your first race!  There’s 16 weeks until the race and that gives even the beginner enough time to lace up and get your body in shape.  The benefits of running are amazing.  You’ll endure a bit of pain in the beginning, but if you do it right and stick with it the glory of attaining your goal will last forever.  I ran my first BSR in 2006 – it was one of the first races I ever participated in and I can still remember the nervousness and excitement I felt at the start as well as the sense of achievement and pride I felt at the finish line.

If you are a beginner, I recommend checking with your doctor to make sure you’re in shape to start a running program and following a proven plan, like Hal Higden’s or contact my good friend Bob Kaehler and have him create a plan for you.  You can even start with a walk/run program.  It’s amazing how fast you’ll see progress and before you know it, you’ll be counting the miles!

I run with a local group of runners in Newtown and we’d love to hear from you if you’re interested in running with a group (of nuts.)  There more information on the race at and I’m including a couple links to get you motivated.

  1. This is my first year running!!! Any suggestions? I’m going to look at the sites you have above. I’m working out 4 days a week, running each day (but time is running out!).

  2. Stacy,

Keep the 10% rule in mind – never run 10% in one week than you did in the previous week… this will ensure that you stay injury free. If you’re running the Broad street, you should be able to at least run 7 to 8 miles in a clip without too much trouble.

Stay well and good luck at Broad Street, perhaps I’ll see you there!

    Mike
