Is it just me, or has the bunny population appeared to have exploded recently? I frequently run through Yardley and I’m definitely seeing more of these little guys than ever. Sure, they may look innocent and cute – but have you seen what they can do to a lettuce crop (or a Knight in armor for that matter)?
But seriously, there’s nothing worse that pouring on the elbow grease tending to your flower bed or garden only to your hard work destroyed at the hands (mouths) of these little nibblers. I used to see a hawk on our street every so often. Once, I even watched in amazement as she swooped out of a tree and snatched bunny on the run. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen our talon bearing bunny eater recently and I’m betting that’s what’s at the heart of the unchecked bunny explosion. Fortunately, thanks to my girls Penny and Montana (both full grown Weimaraners), our back yard and garden stay relatively rabbit-free.
However, if you’re struggling with a bunny problem and don’t have other pets to scare them off, perhaps you should try pepper. I read that a mixture of egg and cayenne pepper works nicely as a deterrent – but be careful if you have cats or dogs as cayenne can irritate the nasal passages of smaller animals. If you’re concerned, ground black pepper has also been reported as an effective deterrent.
How do you keep your garden or flower bed pest free?
